Good-bye 2011

Quietly reminiscing. 2011 had it's fair share of ups and downs. From saying good-bye & moving away from family, friends to a new state, city... to embarking on new Passages, lessons learned, some harder than others, dreams shattered & re-built...new discoveries, shared laughter & tears, over-coming fears. Opportunities widened, heartbreaks, triumphs, the mundane. Life throughout 2011 was anything but boring. Looking to the unknown status of 2012 I have but two wishes: 1) Increased prosperity. 2) A new journey of sorts & most dear to my heart my wish that my daughter have a safe & healthy pregnancy, delivery and that there are no complications!

As for resolutions. I prefer a bucket list instead. I shall continue to fill it up, check items off & remain whimsically optimistic...Happy New Year!

My daughter will be a new Mum in 2012. She has asked me (or rather suggested) that I add my many 'family meals' to my blog, so that she can make them for her mate. So, I shall, over the course of the next few months add several 'family secret' meals, here on my blog. My own Mum taught me these meals. Some I have altered. Others I've created. Feel free to add your versions or questions in the comment section. As I do enjoy reading all comments left, and I shall answer all questions in a timely manner.

Happy Cooking...

Using ONE pound of 96% fat free ground beef, brown over high temp until brown. Add to taste: salt, pepper, and a dash of the following: Soy Sauce, A-1 sauce, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and season salt. Reduce heat to medium once meat is browned.

In sauce pan bring to boil enough water to cook 3/4 package of egg nooodles (more is cooking whole bag).

In one cup measuring cup add 1/2 cup flour, salt & pepper (yes MORE in addition to the browned meat)

Slowly add COLD water to cup, stirring with fork till water/flour mixture reaches one cup mark.
Should be similar to the consistency of pancake mix.

Slowly add flour mixture to warming meat, make sure to STIR it constantly!

If mixture is too thick...

add small amounts of water GRADUALLY, so you don't thin it too much, making it runny.

continue stirring,
You want a GRAVY like consistency.
This process may take a few minutes to achieve gravy status.

once meat and gravy are at a good thickness....

Cover and simmer on LOW temp of five minutes. Turn off burner and allow to sit for another five minutes.

Serve over hot noodles. Add tomatoes or as my daughter like to, a wee bit of ketchup. Enjoy!

Another Year Wiser...

I was happy to celebrate becoming another year (dare I say it?)...older.
Much prefer saying that I'm another year wiser, or, I've just progressed to another year of
new adventures ahead of me.
However we muddle about with the phrasing, fact is, yes, I had a birthday a few days ago.
The 'surprise' factor was being taken to tea instead of traditional 'dinner'.
What a fun treat too.

Dachshund, Vintage Crochet and Pictures

My Dachshund.

Happy Columbus Day to all my American friends.

Even with three months passed since arriving here in Virginia, as of today actually.
I'm still finishing up the final stages of the unpack. All the boxes have been emptied, except
for two boxes filled with DVD's and 15 small book boxes of my mates. (I gave away ninety percent of my library prior to move).

It's the keepsake boxes that I've been organizing or more so, rooting through.
Having stumbled upon a box filled with my Mother's crochet work, I had to snap a few pictures of it!

Mum made hundreds of these. This one was perhaps the very last one she made before passing away. Her hands ached and shook a bit, towards the end.

Mum's reliable potholders. She made hundreds of these too. These were made in the early 80's. They've held up very well!

Ah and Mum's favourite thing to make and give (even to strangers) as gifts. Crochet topped kitchen towels. These were from my Mum's kitchen. Easily these were made in the 70's.

And then I found vintage hankies with my Nana's crochet handiwork.

I think I get my passion for miniature work from my Nana. I love crocheting with steelies, small size hooks. Using the cotton tread is a trick sometimes. I'm always in awe of the finished outcome.

Made this beanie for my son, who will arrive here in VA in six days, to celebrate his 21 birthday. Scrap Yarn

What with the change in season my dogs will need a few sweaters now.
I whipped these scrap yarn/crocheted sweaters up in no time.
Didn't use a pattern just sorta 'winged it'.
Because both dogs are so different in size I measured them and began creating
from there.
As for Natasha's sweater shirt, I used a knitting method first, for her collar.
On double point knitting needles I created a tube.
Then I crocheted the 'skirt' portion. This was a very fast project.
Both sweater were made in a day.

The weather changed so radically this past week.
Just on Monday and Tuesday we were ROASTING!
With temps around 90 degrees up until Wednesday afternoon, that's when the winds picked up.
To my absolute joy, cooler weather blew in.
As I type this the temp tonight has dipped down to 52 degrees!
Crispy coolness prompted us to use our fireplace for the first time since we moved here to
Virginia a little over two months ago.
I'm looking forward to winter this year :)

The Arrival of Fall Weather...finally!

What with having just moved to the east coast of Virginia, I've been very anxious for a 'change' in weather!
Living in paradise (not complaining) has it's advantages. However, I'm looking forward to the dramatic change of weather, that the east coast will offer!

I had started with fewer branches in previous picture. I like the fuller look best.

One such occurrence has finally happened. Cooler weather; FALL.
So, I was so motivated to decorate my mantel yesterday.

Driving from California to Virginia

Left my sisters house in Scottsdale about two hours ago. Heading East now...

Still in Arizona. It's so hot this rain was nice!

Wow, New Mexico is lovely!

Good morning Texas, the start of day two.

The girls slept through most of Oklahoma, Once in Arkansas I was determined to make the boarder before midnight!

Finally made it to the boarder of Arkansas and Tennessee sometime around 11pm.

On the Tennessee highway heading east. It's so green!

Finally made it to Virginia and oh so pretty! On highway 81 now.

Accident on 81, traffic on two lanes sucks!

Wow, the country side is so pretty. Oh my, look at my windshield, so many dead bugs!

After driving for nearly three full days we (the girls and I) make it to the town house. This is them the next morning in our new place. Silly dogs.

Moving from West coast to East coast (Part 1)

The movers loading all the boxes we (good friends and myself) packed. Lots of work! Notice the plastic bins full of yarn. Hint: the clear ones!


The girls are groomed, crated and ready for road trip.

Left California at 9pm. Heading to AZ to see my sister for a few hours.


My sister's dog was very shy! After only a few hours sleep and visit, I must head out on the road again.


Arizona was very wet, north of Scotsdale. Most of my drive was like this, in AZ.

New Mexico looked very welcoming. The heat and humidity were tough though.

Good morning Texas. After driving 12 hours I stopped for a two hour nap. Woke to a Texas sunrise. Only 33 hours earlier I had left California, in the dark.

I took no more still shots until I arrived in Virginia. However, I did shoot video along the way. My next blog will feature my whole trip via video!

The Joy of Moving When You're An Artist...

One of the most frustrating things to face is moving. This is especially true when you are an artist/multimedia creative type.
The harsh reality of my 'collection' of creative media 'finds' has grown over the last 10 years.
Now the hard part sinks in, what to take and what to leave behind.
Not to mention all the other 'crafty' hobbies I have, like; Knitting, Sewing, Crochet, Wood Working, Painting, Jewelry Making, Beading, Scrapbooking, Papercrafts, Rubberstamping (10,000 worth) and countless craft books that have grown into a small library. I literally have 10 bins of yarn as well.

So I've decided to reduce my wood working supplies. And will not take cupboard for rubbers stamps. I plan to box them and sell them off. May even give many away as 'giveaway items'.

Must say, I was sad to see no one commented on my 100th post giveaway. I have SO much stuff to share too. Oh well, I will look for other places to share I guess.

Well, back to sorting, culling and packing...

This gentleman gave a wonder presentation on straw hat making from the Victorian era. He had antique hats on display too that were lovely!

DIY Under Bust From Homemade Pattern

I've struggled with getting a 'perfect fit' for several years. One solution; purchase patterns 'close' to my size and subtract or add inches. This works most of the time however when it comes to corsets in my costuming. It does not work at all! Happily I have found a solution. While searching a local charity shop recently, I stumbled upon a slew of brand new corsets/under busts. Mostly sizes far too small for me. Surprisingly I found one large size that was perfect in width but not in length, (I have a very shortened waist line). Solution; make pattern from store purchased corset (well in this case an underbust) and make adjustments on craft felt. It worked like a charm!!


First you need under bust to trace. I used legal sized copy paper, craft scissors, pen & measuring tape.


Then I trace it using about an inch gap from edge. This is where making adjustment to pattern to insure proper fit for my shape and size is fist done.

Once tracing is complete I...

Pin the pattern to one piece of craft felt material.

Then I cut it out, using about an inch distance from edge of pattern.I also use fabric scissors to create smooth lines without fraying or tearing.

Once it's all cut out, I make adjustment to the cloth. Pinning and fitting upon my DIY dress form to insure proper fit. I reduce edging once I have a good fit.

Once adjustments are perfect I sew it. I bought this, nearly new, craft machine at my favourite charity shop for only $7. Yes it works perfect too! I use it on most of my 'craft' sewing projects. My costuming projects I use my regular sewing machine.

Once all sewn together I must add grommets. I found this set at Harbor Freight Tools for just under $5.

Using craft ribbon from local craft store I lace up my under bust.

And then make any adjustment that are required.

I'm very pleased with how it turned out. This is now a sturdy pattern for me to use.

I will use this to create more costumes using finer more expensive materials without risking them to mistakes. Craft felt usually runs about $4 a yard. Much more economical compared to $20 plus materials a yard!

I needed to do some hand sewing to help reduce a bit of stress.

So I gathered up a small collection of scrap material, recycled clothes, recycled quilt batting...


I'm always surprised by the small amount of material it takes to create wee softies.

This time of year I find myself making not so traditional dishes from home. Take corned beef brisket and cabbage. This really is more of an American dish. Even Betty Crocker lists it as 'New England Dinner'.
None-the-less I was so moved yesterday to make a pot of this lovely food. As for the nature of making this dish, it's rather simple. Corned beef brisket four to five pounds, a dozen or so small to medium sized red potatoes and eight to ten small peeled carrots. To start, season the corned beef a few days ahead, in large zip lock freezer bag. Refrigerate. Day of: In large pot place brisket in seasoning and all. Pour water to cover beef. Cover pot and heat to boil. Reduce heat to simmer after about 10 minutes of boiling, cover and allow to simmer for 2 1/2 hours. Prepare veg about 2 hours into cooking. Add veg (potatoes and carrots only) at this time. Return to simmering, about one hour. With only thirty minutes of cooking time remaining add the quartered bits of cabbage, simmer for thirty minutes more, covered. Once done serve in either a shallow bowl or large platter. I use a mustard sauce with my plate.

As a lovely dessert drink I will put the kettle on and wait for whistle. The I take a strong crystal wine glass and fill it with hot water. After about a minute I pour it out and quickly add two or three spoonfuls of brown sugar to glass, then a nice splash of fine Irish Whisky (usually about two shots worth) I then add strong black coffee (best if from french press) and I top it with a nice helping of whipped cream. This is a lovely spirited treat! Slainte~

I have allot of yarn!
I mean a bunch of yarn. Heaps and heaps of it!
Frankly, I have twelve, thirty gallon plastic storage bins full of yarn!

What this means is I MUST use at least half, if not three quaters
of it, by the end of this year!

Old School Crafing Fun

Many of us Crafty Folks have at least ONCE in our lives used these classic weaver looms and loops.

Over the many years I have worked with children,
taught and even raised my own two kids who are now adults. These weaving looms and loops have always had a place within my crafting supplies.

Sadly, most recently since I am no longer teaching, I realised it had been awhile since they had been used though. So I packed up the half dozen or so looms and loops I had and donated them to a local Brownie Troop.

However, I just couldn't help myself, I had to keep one set for me! And why not? These wee potholders and coaster are great useful items! I've (in the past) made dozens of them, sewn them together and used them as a table pad/guard. And I've used them as place mats. For now, I am just having fun weaving while I watch television. :)

They are simple enough and easy to construct from discarded socks and sewing scraps.

Recently I was rooting through my clothes and realised I had a brand new zipper sweat shirt from my old place of employment! Being that's it's brand new I didn't want to toss it out! However, the schools logo was on it, and I didn't want to wear it with that. So I decided to cover it. This is what I decided to do!!!

Make Something colourful Everyday!

One of my goals for 2011 is to make something colourful everyday!
I've started the new year out with a few small projects.
I'm hopeful that by the end of this year, I'll have made over 365 items.

Now I'm not sure I'll be able to upload pictures everyday, I shall try, going forward.
I will also try and make a tutorial every couple of weeks and upload to this site and link to my
YouTube page.

Happy to have been able to provide for my kids for the last ten years...that chapter of my life is over!
The flat we shared for the last ten plus years, is no more!
We have moved out.
One of my kids is now living in Chicago...the other in San Diego with me (temporarily).
What the future holds is unknown. However, one thing is for certain...it's all about me now.
My passions, my hopes and my dreams.
I am happy too!
Despite some of the unexpected turn of events in recent days, I'm happy.
More surprisingly, I'm hopeful!

James Burks and Me @ Comic Con 2010

I was fortunate enough to meet James Burks this year at Comic Con.

He has created a very clever graphic novel.
At first view of his black and white illustrations, in two other smaller publications, I knew the new book (Gabby & Gator) would be fantastic!

James is a very talented artist, animator and all around great guy! http://www.jamesburks.com/

His new book, due out in September 2010 (just weeks away) will capture your hearts!
Hardcover with 192 pages. This book is full of great illustrations and a story line that will stay with you even after you've closed the book!

Gabby & Gator is perfect for all ages!!

I was lucky to receive an early released copy and have since read it several times to my students and even once to my boyfriend (yes, it's really that good).

Comic Con, My Kids and Me...

Comic Con 2010 was a family affair! Usually I am the only one attending comic con. Joyfully, this year I was not alone.
My son volunteered for four days! And I was so happy to have him join me!
To my uttermost surprise, my daughter also came for a one day visit!!
She and her friend came for a full day and nearly left midway through because of the enormous crowds! I would not let her go and insisted she let me take her for a walkabout on the expo floor!
Within minutes she was spotting celebs and posing with them!
Eventually both my kids met up and as they have always done, began acting silly!
No great surprise, I am their Mum after all ;)
My son was overtaken by a group of Superhero Woman...kissed by a lovely lady in a Steampunk costume (whom he then decided to hang out with at the Costume Ball).
My daughter made it through the great Hall with her mate for a third time only to finally give up, due to sore feet and a grumbling belly.
Happily I have a few pictures of these events.
My heart leaps with joy everytime I see them too!
Comic Con 2010 was so much fun for me and happily my kids too!

So much to do and see while one visits this fine city!
I'm lucky enough to live here...and for the 6 days I spend in hotel, downtown
during Comic Con festivities there is sooooo much to do out and about!
The San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art is hosting a graffiti exhibit that is
in house and out and about the city, and outlining neighbouring towns.

Colourful mix

My usage of
lime green, sky blue and pink really
enhance "spring fever" in my drawings.
Funny how the various seasons influence my
choice in colour pallet.

My favourite medium of late; watercolour pencils.
Along with my extremely fine line perm markers.

Acco brand pencils (made in UK) are so wonderful. I couple them with
Staedtler pencil (made in Germany).

On a whim, I bought discounted markers from a local
art/crafts store. They were so marked down, I just
thought I could trash them if need be.
However, I have found these Martha Stewart brand
markers to be GREAT! With their .1mm tips, I love the
very fine line I am able to make.
I do have several Koh-I-Noor Rapidograph pens,
which have an array to nibs/tips I love.
But for the easy carefree use, these Martha Stewart
writing pens are delightful!

Well I'm off for now. To create more and enjoy this lovely holiday weekend.

Wee Blue Bird Inspiration...

Having finally found the parcels mailed to many moons ago AND
unexpectedly seeing the wee flirty blue bird upon leaving work (see previous post).
I've been inspired and motivated!

Life changes, losses and unexpected events can turn
a person inside out!

yesterday, I noticed this wee bird near my car.

This feathered cutie would fly from the mirror to the sign post, and back.

While at the mirror, the bird would flirt with itself.

During this whole ordeal, there was another birdie who sat near by, watching!

I just finished crocheting 'Tom Turkey'.
I'm making six more Tom's before I fly out on the 20th of this month too.
Must make six more pumpkins and six more fall coloured bowls before the 20th as well.
These are such fun and quick patterns to make, I'm hoping to get them done early enough.
My hope is to make a pair of fingerless gloves and a matching hat before I fly to D.C.
Busy, busy, busy :)

Crocheted Teddy Bear

Happy almost friday!
I am so looking
forward to the weekend, aren't you?

I'm nearly done with my very first Amigurumi Teddy Bear.
This is as much as I've done as of today.

And guess what I stumbled upon, whilst I prodded and poked around my
massive library...crochet magazines from nearly 22 years ago!
This one pictured is from 1992. The pictures in it are seriously out dated, but
the patterns can be worked to a little more modern, posh appeal.

I even found two knitting leaflets from 1945. I cannot wait to start creating something
delightful from them.

But in the meantime, here I sit, sipping my tea, planning a few halloween ATC creations.

Only 23 more days till Halloween!!!

Autumn projects

Good morning everyone.
It is just wonderful to wake to the coolness of air.
After such a long spell of hot weather, this autumn day is a very welcomed change.

With the cool weather on the rise, I thought it best to bring together
all of my crochet/knitting projects.

My oh my, I have a few started.
Well I have nearly finished the baby blanket for a workmate (pastel colours).
I just have the trim to add.

I'm still working on the shawl and socks. (Green projects from previous post).
And I've got the blanket for my son (blue green and yellow Red Heart yarn) colour name, Laddie.

The blue scarf for a friend, and the 'practice' knit, that i've been working on for YEARS...it's a project I started with my Nana, who has been gone now, over 20 plus years. Simple stitches, just mindless knit. Then I hand stitch the 'scarf liKe' rows together to make a king size blanket. I seldom work on it, I must finish someday :)

And my newest project, Amigurumi.
With all the wee scraps I have, I am looking forward to creating a few cuties from my book.

Well, I must dash for now. So much to do.

However, I realise that over six years have passed since these photos were taken.
I haven't aged...no, no, no. I'm still the youthful Mum.

Two knitting projects this month:

Socks. I'm making them with a dreamy soft acrylic blend yarn.

The second project: A super soft shawl made from chenille yarn and using a simple beginner pattern.

I love the colour green. I just started both these projects on Tuesday. Hope to have them finished before the end of the weekend.

A look back to the beginning of this year...

My resolutions for this year:

Setting my schedule for "others"
(In 2008 I gave too much time and effort for others needs, forgetting my own).
Happy to report, I've kept this resolution all year so far. I'm finding
that a happier me can manage a "giving" attitude for others without decreasing my own needs!

Forgetting to practice what I "preach".
(Advising others on lifestyle changes and then not applying to my own life).
I'm struggling on this one! I am about half way there...I'd hoped for 100% but will continue to improve.
Ignoring my creative desires.
(Too often I cleaned up after others' messy habits).
I absolutely kept this one! Creative desires are sought after and fulfilled, often!
Not attending University
(I've made my sacrifice, it's over).
Nope, I've not achieved this one. Sadly I don't think I will until the recession is over, whenever that might be...
Financial struggles
(I am NOT the only adult in the house).
Struggles are still there, however, I'm not "alone" in the struggle. :)
Unhealthy habits
(Youthful fantasies of "living forever" exist no more).
Another "half way there" resolution. Again, I'm hoping for 100% achievement,
but realise it's not going to be within 2009.
I think this one will find it's way over to 2010 resolutions list, top priority!

These are my "hopeful" resolutions.
In the past I've not been very stellar at keeping ALL resolutions

All in all, I have done allot better than I imagined, once I hit a "tough patch" in my personal life,just getting through the day was good for me!
I"m very happy where I'm at with these resolutions.
There are still four more months remaining in 2009.

I just finished watching Julie and Julia.
My daughter wanted to take me to the movies and
we decided on this new release.
I enjoyed this film very much.
The urge to cook something with butter while
sipping on wine has overcome me.

If you haven't seen this movie yet, DO.
It's delightfully charming and heart warming.

Like Julia always said "Bon appetit".

There have been many changes in my life these past few months.
A few difficult things to over come, other events that bring absolute joy to my life and heart.
And the tough choices to make, that take every ounce of energy one can muster up.
Physically I've had a few bouts with ailment. One that has kicked my bum!
The most creatively perplexing event, the melt down of my laptop.

Happy to report, I'm up and running again, my new cherry red "lollipop" cutie sits ever so lovely in my lap, and I'm feeling very creative again.

Thank you for the kind check ins, from a few of you.
I'm not completely out to the woods, so to speak, however;
feeling more energetic and creatively charged to stick around.

I haven't created any fiber arts these past few months.
Mostly paper crafts, when able and spending time with loved ones.

I'll be moving in the next several weeks, so I shall post a bit about that.
Haven't moved from my current residence in nine years...it's going to be a
bit of a challenge.
My kids have grown into fine adults (one still in school, but very near completion).
So there is the "short" of it.

Hope all of you are well. I have a much stronger respect of "health" matters now.
Being "under the weather" for a prolonged bit of time, can really take away the cheery happy status we sometimes take for granted.

I'm gratefully back!

Earth Day 2009

My students have been busy working on Earth Day related projects throughout the last week and a half.
From making natural Fairy houses for our classroom garden. Reducing our
electric use (keeping lights off in the afternoons). Picking up trash at school and around school grounds. And most importantly, learning how to LIVE a Greener lifestyle.
I'm happy for the contributions I'm trying to make to help keep mother earth a greener and healthier place to live.

Wine tasting...

Ok, I know I had promised my very next post
would be a crochet tutorial.
Please forgive me, won't you?

I simply didn't finish it. Instead, I went
wine tasting with a few of my mates.

Oh, what a lovely time too.

My friend and Sommelier, Michael, took us round to two wineries.
We had a fantastic time at Leonesse cellars, there in the barrel room (members only).

I was instantly taken with their 2006 Syrah-Cabernet Sauvignon!
This is their (Leonesse) write up of this wine:

"Elegant and balanced, offering rich concentrated aromas of blackberry, plum and black licorice accented by subtle hints of vanilla and pepper. Aged for 18 months in a combination of small French and American oak barrels, this wine has a soft, silky tannins before a long and lingering finish"

Oh my, I must say it is all this and so much more, at least upon my pallet it was/is.
Michael surprised me with a bottle of this, for take home. I'm such a lucky lady too!
I can't wait to open and enjoy this wine, in the comfort of home!

We moved on to Baily's vineyard and winery, first stopping at Carols for luncheon. Where I enjoyed a lovely glass of Sangiovese. This is their (Baily's) write up on this wine:

"2006 - The premier grape of Tuscany now gets top billing. We've been making this wine for several years but have been calling it T.V. Red. A very drinkable wine with a fresh nose, great aromas of berries and nice spicy flavors. Goes well with hamburgers, steaks, turkey, goose, duck, appetizers, cheeses an dpasta dishes".

Once our yummy lunch was finished, we moved into the tasting room, where we immediately began sampling more reds, well in my case I did. I stayed far away from any white wine this trip.

Having had the Sangiovese at lunch I started with the Cabernet Sauvignon

"2005 - Good color, loads of fruit, and a rich, silky mouth feel make this a Cab to take to your wine snob friends. Made from 97% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Cabernet Franc, it was aged in European oak for 30 months. Only a few hundred cases are made each year and they’re quickly snapped up. Serve with beef and lamb dishes, steaks, cheeses".

Then next with the Cabernet Franc
"2004 -We've been working with this grape as a component of our Meritage. Aged in European Oak cooperage for two years, it has aromas of black cherry and vanilla. Try it with rack of lamb, roast beef, or cheese".

And finished with the Meritage

"2003 - Made from the best barrels of our Cabernet Sauvignon (58%), Cabernet Franc (32%) and Merlot (10%). Aged in French and American Oak cooperage for 35 months, it is a wine of superb elegance and finesse".

The Meritage was my favourite at Bailys. I sampled it twice, actually.
It happened to be my first taste, but I had forgotten that, till just now.
Happily I walked away with a stemware from our kind wine steward.

All and all, this was a most fantastic day.
Well spent with good mates!
Lots of laughter, grand conversations, and delicious food and wines!
Next time you find yourself in Southern California, in the Temecula Valley (wine country) pay these two wineries a visit. I truly think, you will enjoy them as much as I did.

Crocheted bunnies and friends...
