Tink, I actually just freehand knitted this. However, I cast on 84 stitches, and started decreasing at a point where I wanted the hat to narrow. To decrease, I placed stitch markers as even as possible around my work and deceased every third knitted row, creating a spiral decrease. Eventually I had to switch to DPN once the work got too small for my circular knitting needles.
